Philip Feeney

Philip Feeney studied composition with Robin Holloway and Hugh Wood at Cambridge University and with Franco Donatoni in Rome. He has written extensively for ballet and dance and is well known as a pianist, working with many companies including Northern Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambert, Acosta Danza, Adventures in Motion Pictures and the Martha Graham Dance Company. 

As a composer, he has collaborated with choreographers including Christopher Gable, David Nixon, Michael Pink, Didy Veldman, Michael Keegan-Dolan, Derek Williams, Adam Cooper, Sara Matthews and hip-hop artist Jonzi D. His music has been performed by companies as diverse as English National Ballet, Boston Ballet, Rambert, Cullberg Ballet, Scottish Dance Theatre, Bern Ballett, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet and Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre, for which he wrote scores for the company’s critically acclaimed Giselle (2003) and award-winning The Bull (2005). 

Philip Feeney’s association with Northern Ballet in Leeds, England extends more than 25 years. He has written eight full-length scores for the company including Gableʼs Cinderella, Gableʼs and Pinkʼs Dracula and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Veldmanʼs A Streetcar Named Desire, Nixonʼs Hamlet and Cinderella as well as Marstonʼs Jane Eyre and Victoria.

In 2020, Philip Feeney collaborated with the American Ballet Theatre for the first time, arranging the music for Alexei Ratmansky’s Of Love and Rage premiere. This was based on Aram Khachaturian's score, including pieces from Gayaneh and will have its European premiere with the Vienna State Ballet in October 2025 under the title Callirhoe.
