Tareq Nazmi

Renowned bass Tareq Nazmi studied in Munich with Edith Wiens and Christian Gerhaher and received private instruction from Hartmut Elbert. He began his career in the Opera Studio of the Bavarian State Opera, where he remained a member of the ensemble until 2016. With his distinctive role portrayals, he has established himself on international opera stages.

Key milestones in his career include Sarastro at the Salzburg Festival in 2022 – following his international breakthrough as the Speaker in 2021 – as well as his debut as King Heinrich (Lohengrin) at the Vienna State Opera. At the Salzburg Easter Festival in 2024, he appeared as Alvise (La Gioconda). At the Bavarian State Opera and the Tokyo Spring Festivalin 2025, he sang Gurnemanz (Parsifal) after his debut in Geneva, a role that has since become one of his signature parts. In the summer of the same year, he impressed again at the Salzburg Festival as Banco (Macbeth).

Further important roles have included Ferrando (Il trovatore) in Munich, as well as Sarastro with the Cleveland Orchestraunder Franz Welser-Möst.

In the 2025/26 season, Tareq Nazmi will again appear in major roles at leading houses: at the Vienna State Opera as Sarastro and the Commendatore (Don Giovanni), as well as Rocco (Fidelio) in a new production of Fidelio. At the Berlin State Opera he will perform Zaccaria (Nabucco), and in Tokyo Daland (Der fliegende Holländer).

With Verdi’s Requiem he embarks on a U.S. tour in January 2026. At the Konzerthaus Berlin he will perform the bass part in Haydn’s The Creation. Franz Schmidt’s The Book with Seven Seals takes him to Hamburg and Dortmund. In May 2026, he will once again sing the bass part in Mahler’s Eighth Symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic.
